Information & Background -
The Shropshire Alliance League was actually formed when two Shropshire leagues decided it would be in everyone’s interest to amalgamate two leagues into one league, this was around the 1970’s and its estimated The Shropshire Alliance Leagues first full season would have been the 1977/1978 season. One of the main reasons for this, is its understood that due to the length of the names of each league, clubs, committee members etc. found it difficult to fit the name’s of either league on to one cheque! However, as you can see from the information provided, one league (for various reasons) was losing clubs, where as the other was rapidly gaining interest from more clubs on a yearly basis.
Information follows, on the two leagues in question and the roots to the start of
The Shropshire Alliance League.
1. The Shrewsbury & District League
Activities started in 1945, it was through the efforts of Mr George Davies as secretary, Mr Jim Fullwood as chairman and Mr Sam Powell as president. Another stalwart was Mr W.R. (Bill) Hinks. Mr Hinks did three years as League secretary from 1946 – 1949 when he was succeeded by Mr Doug Lawrence of Pontesbury. Present holder of office, Mr Frank Morris, took over in 1973. First honorary treasurer was Mr A. Leslie Knighton. His successor in 1958, Mr Bill Stephenson, was at the helm till (we believe) 1977. Then the amalgamation of The Shropshire Alliance was formed around the 1977 period. The Shrewsbury & District League period of 1945 to est. 1977 membership rose to a peak of 45 clubs dividing into 3 divisions at one time, but for various reasons, it declined in the 1970’s to a low of 14 clubs. The new progress to amalgamate two leagues took its course, but this league certainly put together through its years a very fine collection of trophies.
2. The West Shropshire League
This league was formed at a meeting called by Mr J.H. Jones in the Bath Arms, Minsterley, on September 27, 1949. The object was to provide competition for the reserve teams in the area and those others who had been unable to gain entry to other local competitions. Mr Bertram E. Pugh, the first president, also donated the handsome Llycad y Dydd championship cup. Fixtures began within a month with eight clubs taking part. In the 1970’s the league reach a peak of 35 clubs in three divisions, then the amalgamation of the two league’s took place to form The Shropshire Alliance League.
Office holders from The West Shropshire League (1949 to 1977) included: chairmen, Mr Fullwood (1949-56), Mr A. Hayward (1956-75) and Mr Walter Rowley (1975-77); presidents, Mr M. Holloway (1956-76) and Mr S.M. Rogers (1976-77). Honorary treasurer Mr T. Wootton (1949-58) was succeeded by Mr Harold Cureton (1958-1977). Honorary secretary, Mr Don Canham, who was very well known in football circles & in local government too, was elected to succeed one of the founders, Mr T. Green, in 1965.
